I have a very strong interest to become an auditor. I would like to join the internship programme at Ernst & Young Malaysia as a starter for my auditor journey. I am able to join the internship programme from 29th December 2014 to 20th March 2015. Therefore, I can join the intake on 5th January 2015. I will take the opportunity to learn and explore advanced auditing knowledge.

I am under-graduating in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Accounting and Finance. During the course, I am able to draw and document flowchart of purchases cycle. Meanwhile, I can use systematic random sampling technique to select samples for vouching. I believe that I can jump start my work in Ernst & Young. I am diligent as I often completed my academic assignment a week before the submission date. I am enthusiasm in learning new knowledge related to auditing in practical way.   

I am impressed by the vision of Ernst & Young, which encourages teamwork to think critically. I am interested in one of the area of assurance in Ernst & Young, which is fraud Investigations and Disputes. I am interested in tracing and vouching to investigate any misstatement in financial reports. I am also respecting the responsibility of auditor with regard to the Companies Act 1965 section 174.

Week 11

Monday to Thursday
          One of my colleagues is rank no.2 in the world in ACCA professional exam. He is Johnny Ho Chan Wee. I asked him about the way to study efficiently. He advised me that I should convert the lecturers’ notes into my own word. Your revision will be much faster and easy to remember. Besides, I should spare two hours for revision after the class. It is efficient to revise the notes when it is still fresh in your mind. He also shared me his ACCA notes in soft copy.



Friday
         Today is my last day on working in EY, my feeling is quite contradictory. I was happy because I can relief from the tough working life. I was sad as I could not learn anything more from FIDS. I believe there is a lot of knowledge I would learn it if I could stay there longer. Another thing is that I cannot stay and have fun with my lovely colleague. I will remember every moment I'm staying with my colleagues. Before I leave, I received a reference letter from the Human Resources department.

During the lunch time, the Partner treated us a lunch to celebrate for my farewell. We took a group photograph to record the special moment.
  



At night, they planned to celebrate my farewell in The Point. It seems like a small pub. I was excited as that is my first time going to pub. We have a great night and dinner with my colleagues. After the dinner, I delivered a thank you speech to all of my colleagues and gave two thank you letters to my managers. Meanwhile, I received my evaluation form for this internship.

Week 10

Monday to Friday
            Since the project is close to the end, my manager has time to take lunch with me. My manager has strong social skill. He treats his subordinates like family members. He has a strong sense of humor. His speeches always make laughter. Everyone in this department is happy to talk with him. Hence, I manage to learn from him.

Therefore, I took the opportunity to apply my social skill on him that I have learned. Meanwhile, I ask him to provide some suggestion on improving social skill. I am happy as he guides me by steps to communicate with people effectively. I was enjoy to talk with him.

Monday to Friday

Today, I joined a new project to compare the commercial invoice from different sources. The sources could be from client, client’s customer and third party. The objective of the testing is to investigate the undervalued invoice amounts declaring to the Customs. It is to identify invoices that evading custom duty and tax. I was responsible to print every respective invoice assigned to me. My senior had explained to me the background of the case from the beginning, before I proceeded my work. Therefore, I understood what I am doing and how the company is operating. I was appreciated to join this department as they treat me like a family member. They often share information and knowledge to me.

Week 8

Monday to Friday
Today, I was assigned to another project. The project is engaged in compliance testing. I should investigate whether the claims of expenses are compliant to the company policy. For example, internal dinner should be bill on the most senior staff. I learned to write the finding professionally. Hence, it improves my writing skill. In additions, I learned some new function in Microsoft Excel and Power Point. I believe that it would help me in my future career.

The manager of the project is willing to teach me slowly and explain the work in detail. So, I understood the process of compliance testing. When we found any non-compliance claims, we will call the client to clarify the issue. When the manager speaks to client on telephone, I try to listen and learn the technique of speaking politely and professionally to the client. I am appreciating when I am working on the project.

Week 7

Monday & Tuesday
            Since the project is in final stage, I have been assigned a few easy tasks to do. My senior realized some mistakes on report and jot down on a notebook. Then, I need to revise the report according to the notebook. I grab the opportunity to study the report. I understand the structure of the report and some appropriate words to write a report. It can improve my writing skill on report. It was interesting when I study the finding on possible frauds and weaknesses in policy. The report allows me to learn practical knowledge.

            When I was free, I have searched for the process of computer forensic analysis to improve my understanding on investigation process. I have found the following websites that is good in explaining and clarifying the process.

On Tuesday, I was instructed to convert scanned documents to OCR pages. OCR pages allow user to find and copy text from a scanned document. The software is called PDF-XChange Editor. However, it cannot convert multiple file into OCR pages. Therefore, the software, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, is applied. The software saves a plenty of time and allows me to do other works. I am appreciated to learn a new technique.

Wednesday to Friday (CNY)
            Wednesday is the eve of Chinese New Year (CNY) as well as firm’s holiday. I grabbed this opportunity to help my mom in house cleaning. I was excited when I saw the house became clean and hygienic, especially my room. I found a lot of unused stuff storing in my room. I decided to throw the stuff to make my room looks bigger. After I cleaned my room, I can feel and breathe the freshness in my room. Therefore, I planned to clean my room once a month. I enjoy the house cleaning and wait for the first day of CNY.  

            Today is the first day of CNY, I wore a new red shirt and pants to celebrate CNY. According to the Chinese traditional, we should not eat any meat in the first day. My mom cooked different foods and vegetables that taste like eating meat. After the breakfast, my family and I went out to shopping mall to watch a new movie. It was a great time to talk to my family. I decided to spend my holiday to stay with my parents.


            In the second to fourth day of CNY, I went to my grandmother’s house to visit her and celebrate CNY with my relatives. I shared my working experience in EY to my relatives. Since they have been working for a few years, they advised me on my sharing and taught me the way to improve my social skill. They suggested me to start talking to a small group of people. It allows me to practice and gain confidence. In additions, I was appreciated when they taught me some practical information and knowledge in auditing.

Week 6

Monday to Wednesday
I worked in client office on these three days. I was instructed to do personnel profiling. I extracted all the relevant information from a bunch of documents. It was interesting as I can see the history of personnel of top management. I found the effort and insist they have put to become top management. Their histories also tell me that I should work on something that I am interested on. I found a personnel works on the industry that he was not studying in the beginning of his study. Therefore, I am excited to find out what is my interest.

I have a talk with a pilot when I was on the way to home in a bus. He shared with me his personal experience from cadet to captain. It was surprised me when he talk about some little story on his work. Meanwhile, I gained some knowledge about the airplane. For example, when the airplane engages in autopilot mode, captain should monitor the radar display. It is to make sure the airplane does not drift out of the right direction. I am glad to talk with a pilot.

Thursday and Friday
Thursday is the birthday of the new hire, Azhar. Our department plans to give him a surprise. We were pretending to forget his birthday in the office in the morning. When the birthday cake arrives at 3.00 pm, we sing a birthday song together to Azhar. At that moment, he was touching and his tears are almost come out from his eyes. 

On Friday, our department has a dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year. The dinner is held in Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant at 6.30. The restaurant is nearby our office. It is the time to improve my social skill. I was trying to join the group conversation. I was cultivating my confidence when I talk to a group of seniors. Although I felt uncomfortable and nervous, I believe I can confront it and improve my social skill. The dinner was great and I have got closer to my seniors.

Week 5

Monday & Tuesday
These two days are holiday for EY. I have more time to get together with my family. Usually, I do not have much time to accompany my mother to go to shopping mall in weekday. So, I took the opportunity to get along with my family. My dad brought us to shopping mall to buy new shirt for celebrating Chinese New Year. I was enjoy in the holiday.

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
All of my colleagues went to Cebu, Philippine to attend training course for this whole week. I am alone in the office. Luckily, my senior has assigned a new task for me. I found that it is not convenient to communicate through the e-mail or messenger. Therefore, I have asked my senior to do an example, so as to get an idea to do my work. Meanwhile, I will send my work to my senior for checking. This allows me to complete my work efficiently.

On Thursday, there is a new hire joined our department. He is a Malay boy. I shared him with the culture and background of the department. He also shared with me on his study in Australia. Since he is specialized in taxation, I learned the difference between Australian and Malaysian taxation system. I am appreciated that he taught me the trick of Australian in avoiding tax.


On Friday, I completed my work. I was instructed to study FIDS manual by my senior. It documented the policy and procedure that we should comply in any cases. Although there are a lot of difficult vocabularies, I try to find the meaning from the internet. The manual is interesting as it demonstrates the procedure to detect fraud in the financial report.

Week 4

Monday to Friday
Today, my senior, Jessica, fetches me to client place in the morning. This is also my first time to work in outside of office. Initially, Jessica gave me a list of questions and instructed me to get the answers from a set of policy, procedure and manual. My work is to test whether the company policy is weak and lack of control, or any misrepresentation of staffs. Basically, it is called compliance testing. I was excited as I contributed to the project.


Meanwhile, I knew that how the policy is constructed and structured. I learned to use some technique to extract the information quickly from the policy. I also understood some jargons or professional words related to the specific industry. Since my work is highly confidential, I am not allowed to disclose any information about the company. Another technique I learned is Relationship Mapping. It is to mix and match any possible relationship among the company and individual, in order to identify their relationships. It was surprising me when I see the outcome from the working paper. I am appreciated as I learned something worthwhile on my work. I have been working on the project for this week. This week, I experienced my first time to take bus to go home. I was tired and exhausted.

Week 3

Monday
            Today, my work is referencing and tagging the supporting document for the next week court case. After my senior instructed me to complete it by Friday, I began to worry that I may not able to complete it on time. I was thinking that this is my first work, I must complete it perfectly and submit it punctually. I tried to reduce my lunch hour to 30 minutes in order to do my work. This is also my first time to stay late to do work until 7 pm at night.


Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
            I estimated my working progress and found that there are still many to go. I managed to ask my senior about the fastest way to complete my work. Her advice is useful and helped me to improve the speed of my working progress. I decided to stay over time until 9 pm. I believe I can complete it on time. I was exhausted and tired when I reached my home. I went to sleep immediately. It was an unforgettable experience for me. Furthermore, I continue to rush my work on Wednesday and Thursday.


Friday

            Eventually, I finished my work on time. I felt excited and relax after I done my work. I have been assigned a new work. I am happy that I am going to learn something new. During the lunch hour, the head of my department, Joyce Lim, fetched all my colleague to Jalan Ipoh to take our lunch. Joyce is also one of the partner in EY. Therefore, I was nervous and excited as I am going to take my lunch with a partner. Surprisingly, she is approachable and people-oriented leader in the department. I am happy to talk with her. She shared her experience to me in the department. I learned something new about the department after her sharing, As I was reluctant and bored to eat in EY, I wish that there is another chance to go out somewhere to take my lunch.

Week 2

Monday
      Today, I have a training session that was prepared by my department to provide information on vision 2020. It clarifies the strategies to achieve the department and EY’s goal. In the introduction, the chairperson, Joyce Lim, briefed us on the history of FIDS. FIDS was placed under risk management and advisory services in the past. Recently, it was parked under one of the assurance service line. This department needs various and combined knowledge on business operation, audit and advisory. Therefore, I believe I can learn a lot in this department in the next two months.

EY’s goal focuses on quality, market, people, and operational excellenceQuality can be met by minimizing and preventing any mistake made on the works. It ensures the department to produce valuable outcome. It encourages people to review the work done before submitting it to senior. Market can be achieved by contributing valuable ideas in the proposal. It can improve our image among the clients. Clients would recommend our services to others. People focus on developing people and individual. Employees can learn and develop new skills in their careers. It encourages people to share information among the department. Operational excellence is pursuing for meeting time and key performance indicator. It encourages people to increase effectiveness in providing services to clients. I am allowed to disclose the information about the department until this line. Other information, such as department’s structure, is highly confidential.

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
           In these three days, I was doing the filing and referencing on every documents. I tried to understand the nature and meaning of the documents. I would understand the holistic picture on fraud investigation. In addition, I tried to communicate with my college to improve my social skill. I was aggressive in sharing my life experience to my college during lunch time. It allows them to have a better and deeper understanding on me as well as I can learn to meet friends in workplace.

Friday

            Today, I realized something interesting in my workplace. I found that there are three Ms. Siti are helping me in my internship period. In the beginning of my internship, Ms. Siti Nazierah offered me a position in FIDS department. In my workplace, Ms Siti Maria is my admin officer, who helps me on submitting timesheet. Timesheet is a system to record my working hours. Another Ms Siti Rohaiya teachs me on the IT issues, such as the use of photocopy machine. I am appreciating that they are helping me along the way in my career. Moreover, most of my colleague’s name are start with “J” in my office, such as Julie, Justin, Joyce, Jessica, John, Jonathan and Johnny. That is very fun.

Week 1

Monday

        Today is my first day to work in a multinational audit firm, Ernst & Young. I am excited and hopeful as I am going to meet new friends and learn new things. I have set some objective that I want to achieve during and after the internship:
1) Improve social skill
2) Achieve better performance evaluation
3) Improve communication skill
4) Improve understanding in detecting fraud

         I have made some friends during the orientation. Some of them are either a permanent staff or an industrial trainee. The orientation guides us to use the company’s facilities, such as Information Technology (IT) system and financial claim.  After the orientation, I have been allocated to the department of Fraud Investigation & Disputes Services (FIDS). The partner of FIDS introduced me on the operations in FIDS. I have been assigned to check for the completeness of the documents. My colleagues treated me like a family member. I believe I can adapt the new environment easily in my workplace. I managed to ask my supervisor about the operation of the department, so that I can get more detailed understanding in my workplace.

Tuesday
         In the morning, I went to an audit course. The course is held for two days only.I learned about the EY Global Audit Methodology (GAM). GAM ensures the auditors from every EY branches are using the standardized method to do audit works. I learned about the following knowledges:
1) Identify materiality and tolerable error on financial statements.
2) Write the Global Working Paper Index and footing on audit working papers.
3) Interview with the clients.
4) Identify reliable evidences and supporting documents for audits.

          There are a few interesting role-playing activities during the course. The activities include interview with clients, prepare working papers, check and write footing on the working paper. It enables me to have a better and deeper understanding in auditing. 

Wednesday
           Today is the final audit courses. I am excited as I am going to learn something more specific and practical knowledge about auditing. I learned the techniques to observe physical inventory count, and auditing cash and cash equivalent, income statements, trade receivable, trade payable and fixed assets. Meanwhile, I understood some of the possible fraud consideration when auditing those categories. For example, company may create non-existing customers to boost up the sales. Therefore, we should ensure the sales records do have the supporting document, which is delivery order. Issuing a delivery order indicates the goods have been sent to customers. 

           The speaker shared with us about his personal experiences in auditing. He told us on what should do and what should not do in the workplace and client entity. I learned to act professionally throughout the audit works. At the end of the course, we played a tie toe game to learn something from fun and relax activities. The course is valuable and fun.
